Juniors
Mets are heavily committed to junior player development at many levels, running junior training camps and tournaments catering for younger players wishing to enter the sport.
We run U16 and U19 national league teams and more experienced junior players compete in the senior national league for the adult teams. Several Mets juniors currently train with the Scottish National Junior Squad.
Junior National League History
Glasgow Mets launched there new junior sides in the summer of season 2005/2006. This
saw the rebirth of a junior men’s and women’s volleyball in Glasgow. In the first
season both teams and the club coach were trying to find there feet in the different
leagues. The Mets men went into the under 16 League and were very stable. The men
were competing well with the other teams. They soon found themselves moving comfortably
to the play offs in their first year. In the whole season the only team that had
beaten us was City of Edinburgh. We went to the play off knowing that we would face
an experienced C.O.E team with a few years of JNL under their belts and the resulting
game was awesome. Mets played some fantastic volleyball in the first set out hitting
and blocking the capital side. This gave the Mets the 1st set. Then disaster, C.O.E
came back very strong and used all their experience to put an impressive 2nd set
score on the board. With the game at 1-

The girl’s team was a completely different story. We had a small squad with only 6 girls and this proved to be quite unstable. We also played at under 19’s as two of our players were too old for the 16’s league. This season was a steep learning curve for our girls; however they made great improvement and learned a lot from the other teams. They did not win many games in this season but they did grow stronger mentally and physically. They girls also learned how to keep rallies alive thought ball control which would come in very handy for the next season.
2006/2007
After a good start to the first Mets JNL we were looking to build on the foundations
that had been built. Word had spread about the success of the junior programme and
the work of the coaches and this resulted in Mets attracting new players to the team.
Most importantly the number of Under 16 females. This would allow Mets to enter a
full squad into the under 16 category and compete at the correct level. What a difference
a year makes. The senior girls supported the new players very well and helped them
fit in at the club. At last we had achieve some stability on the court and it wasn’t
long before this new found balance began to show on the court. The girls were winning
matches and winning them with confidence and great volleyball. It was clear that
we would make the play offs in this season. The division still had very good opposition
and not all games were going to be a sure thing. Marr college have been very good
at JNL and I was sure that they would be our nearest rivals come the play offs. At
the playoffs the Mets girls had to face south Ayr in the first round to make it to
the finals. The girls continued to play great volleyball and eased there way to the
final where Marr College awaited them. The girls were nervous and rightly so it was
a final. They went out with all guns blazing and took the opening set. The second
set was very close and Marr College took the game in a very tight game. Suddenly,

The Boys came into this season with great expectations after last year’s final appearance. Main rivals C.O.E had moved up to play in the U19 category which would boost our confidence for the season ahead. Pretty soon in to the campaign we were rated as the team to beat and the Ayrshire teams, who were rapidly emerging as JNL contenders knew this. Throughout this season Mets dominated there group matches until the last JNL round of games where a depleted Mets squad lost to Belmont. This gave the Belmont side a huge boost as they were looking likely to be in the playoffs. Keen to ensure that the boys did not suffer the same fate as previous years Mets focused hard for the play offs. In the first game, Mets breezed by their opponents from south Ayrshire in straight sets to make the final in consecutive seasons. With our place booked in the final, we awaited eagerly the out come of the second match between Belmont and Dundee. This tie was very close and in the end it was the Ayrshire men from Belmont who were to be our opposition in the finals. Prior to this game there had been a lot of chat saying that the Belmont side were out to beat us again, and that they felt that they had the upper hand for this match up. This was building to be a great final. After an inspirational team by head coach Andy Fleming, the boys were motivated and ready. No one could have predicted what was about to unfold.
From the first ball served Mets meant business. The teams put on a masterful display of volleyball, passing from Alan Cuthbert, Scot Montgomery, Greg Forest and Johnny Pender was superb allowing Fraser Brown to set the middle with ease. Sean Hendry displayed the power and range of shots that have propelled him into the clubs National league teams. Powerful hitting on the outside from Forrest and Montgomery left the Belmont boys in disarray. Strong back court performances from Scott Esselmonet and Allan Cuthbert thwarted any attacks that the Belmont team could muster. The team destroyed Belmont in the first set and went into the second on a high. Expectedly Belmont came out strong and angry about the manner in which they had lost the first. However the focused Mets team were relentless, strong blocking from Hendry Esselmonet and Forest left the Belmont attack helpless to stop the Mets team. Johnny Pender put a fantastic run of 13 service points together that really killed the Belmont resurgence. Mets coasted to an emphatic victory, with an amazing display of powerful contro
