Mets I and II win in Glasgow derby

Posted on 16th February 2012

Saturday the 11th of February saw the visit of Glasgow rivals Su Ragazzi to St. Mungos Academy. Scotland coach Simon Loftus was sitting in the crowd inspecting players to add to his squad that won the Novotel Cup in Luxembourg. It may not be an Old-Firm match, but there really is nothing like derby day in Glasgow. The Scottish Volleyball Association also assigned the most respected referee in the country - Brian McDougall - who recently received confirmation he had been selected to referee at the Olympic Games in London.

Mets struggled in the early stages as Su ran into an 8-12 lead. Mets couldn't fight their way back into the set as both sides traded blows...Read more

Mets sides stumble into quarter finals of Scottish Cup

Posted on 24th January 2012

Both Mets sides drew their South Ayrshire counter-parts in the 1st round proper of the Scottish Cup.

Mets first team managed to overcome South Ayrshire I by 3 sets to nil despite an ankle ligament injury sustained to outside hitter Alan Milton. With no substitutes this saw Mets effectively play with 5 players for 3 sets - no mean feat against a South Ayrshire team who have been performing well in their first year in the premier division.

Mets second team, playing against third division opposition South Ayrshire II made hard work of their victory with signs of complacency from the outset after their 5 sets to nil victory over Belshill II.

A dogged performance by the Ayrshire side saw them push Mets to a fifth set. The fifth set was a bridge too far as Mets ran out 15-3 winners to seal a spot in the quarter finals of the cup.

Mets storm into the new year

Posted on 15th January 2012

A happy new year from everyone at Glasgow Mets!

Mets got off to the best possible start with the first team overcoming a potentially tricky obstacle in the form of Bon Accord in Aberdeen. Running out 3-0 winners, in arguably their best performance of the season, was just the start the doctor ordered for 2012.

Mets second team put the worry of relegation almost out of their mind with a 5-0 victory over title contenders Belshill Cardinals at Wishaw Sports Centre.

The highlight of the weekend however was a man of the match performance from Andy Fleming who has been missing from the game for over a year due to an ankle injury. He was untouchable playing in the off-setter position and it was a real testament to his desire to return from such a serious injury.

Brian Taggart - 21st Anniversary

Posted on 15th January 2012

21 years ago Brian Taggart, a player and friend of a number of ex Mets players, was killed in a tragic road accident.

(Almost) Each year since Brian McDougall has arranged a tournament in his honour. This trim tournament (with specially adapted rules) sees 2 men and 2 women compete for the honour of holding the coveted trophy with all money raised from the entry fee and raffle going towards charity.

This year, on the 8th January, saw the side 'Still Game' (which included ex-Mets players Stevie Mitchell and Scott Collins) run out victorious (yet again!).

The tournament is run in the first couple of weeks of the new year so if you're interested in playing next year be sure to keep your Sundays free in the new year.

A big thanks to Brian McDougall for arranging the tournament every year and to Glasgow City Council for their continued support of the event.

Killie I put dampener on promo day

Posted on 11th December 2011

Mets II took a huge step towards securing their second division status in the early match on Met's promotional day. Despite playing well within themselves Mets ran out comfortable winners with Greg Forrest by far and away the man of the match.

After some local kids took part in the 'come and try' session which saw the stripes beat the spots 12 points to 10 we came to the highlight of the day as Mets I took on Kilmarnock I.

The title contenders match however did not live up to it's billing with Kilmarnock comfortable 3 sets to nil victors. Mets put up a fight in the first with the set going to 32-30 but were powerless to resist Kilmarnock in the second and third sets.

The loss, whilst being disappointing, is unlikely to damage Mets chances of qualifying for the play-offs come the end of the season.

Mets in comprehensive win over South Ayrshire

Posted on 5th December 2011

With Mets II on a break because of the odd number of teams in the second division Mets I were the only side in competition.

Mets bounced back from their defeat to City of Edinburgh which saw them crash out of the Top Teams Cup. Up against new boys South Ayrshire Mets made the short trip to Ayrshire and comfortably recorded a 3 sets to 0 win.

This seems them sit second in the league with 5 wins and 1 defeat, a record which barring a monumental collapse, will see the defending champions reach the play-off stages for the national league yet again.

Mets sides crash out of cup competitions

Posted on 27th November 2011

Mets I opened the action with a match against City of Edinburgh in the Top Teams Cup in a match that would see the winner go on to compete in the final of the Top Teams Cup and the loser exit the competition.

The result ended in a 3 sets to 2 defeat for Glasgow Mets. At times the level of play from both sides was a demonstration of why the sides are both challenging for the 1st division title this year. An unfortunate injury to Graham Riddle ended his match early and we all wish him a speedy recovery.

Mets II suffered a defeat to the side that they defeated in the Plate Final last season. This result sees them miss out on entering the Cup proper and sees them drop in the Plate for this season.
